The Rosses - Specialist Housing Helps Residents Maintain Independence

Residents living at The Rosses sheltered housing scheme continue to report positive feedback in relation to the additional practical and social care support services available to those living within the accommodation.

On Friday 11 November 2011 a “Celebration of Supported Housing” was held at The Rosses attended by local voluntary and statutory sector representatives, Derry City Councillors and representatives from the local community.

The Rosses is a high quality sheltered housing facility located in a quiet private location just off the Limavady Road.  The scheme is managed on behalf of the Oaklee Homes Group by Niamh (the Northern Ireland Association for Mental Health) and includes 34 self-contained single and double apartments along with a number of separate bungalows.

Demand is continuing to grow in the Waterside for this accommodation which offers a unique support service tailored to meet the needs of tenants living independently within the scheme.  Along with group and social activities, experienced and skilled social care staff offer a befriending service and individual support to enable tenants to maintain their tenancies and independence. Support can include assistance with daily living and domestic skills such as shopping, budgeting and household management; transport and assistance with GP and hospital appointments; information on claiming benefits and welfare rights advice.

Speaking at the event the Mayor Alderman Maurice Deveney, said
“I am delighted to share in this Celebration event to acknowledge the contribution this service has provided within the local community. Oaklee Homes Group and Niamh (the Northern Ireland Association for Mental Health) supported by the statutory services, clearly demonstrate how organisations working in partnership can provide a high quality service which enhances the quality of life to everyone living at The Rosses”.

Niamh Senior Manager, Liam Quigley highlighted the benefits available to those living at The Rosses:
“Self-contained apartments at The Rosses are finished to a very high specification with ground and first floor availability, onsite parking and landscaped gardens.  Local amenities and shops are close by with an adjacent bus stop to the city centre. A 24 hour telephone helpline is in place and guest room facilities are available for families and friends.
The Rosses enables individuals from all parts of the city and beyond to enjoy quality independent living, whilst being reassured by the provision of additional support, if required. For the majority of tenants, the cost of living at The Rosses is linked to Housing Benefit and therefore the service is free at the point of delivery to those who qualify.”

Monica a tenant for 4 years, is proud to live at The Rosses and very appreciative of the support offered by staff:
“I feel very safe living at The Rosses – the staff are great and help me with my shopping and medical appointments. Staff organise bingo, art classes and entertainment as well as outings and shopping trips.  If you have any problems, there’s always a staff member ready and willing to listen”.

Speaking at the Celebration event Ian Elliott, Group Chief Executive, Oaklee Homes Group welcomed this partnership approach:
“Oaklee is delighted that the partnership with Niamh helps us to provide independent living here in the Waterside.  I am always impressed with the dedication of the staff and the support they give to our tenants, to help them enjoy a very good quality of life and events here in the Rosses.  I hope people will make The Rosses their number one choice for a number one service”.

There are currently only two vacancies at The Rosses for individuals aged over 50 and retired or those aged over 40 living with a disability.
